Why I Recommend Collette Tours
If you are someone who wants to really experience a destination but doesn't necessarily want to figure out every hotel, transfer, tour, and activity yourself, Collette is definitely worth looking at.
Collette has been in the travel business for over 100 years and offers guided vacations all over the world. What I like about Collette is that their trips aren't just about getting you from one tourist attraction to another. The goal is to actually experience the destination, learn about the culture, try the food, meet local people, and see places you may not have discovered on your own.
And, of course, someone else is handling a lot of the logistics along the way.
Classic Tours vs. Small Group Explorations
One of the first things I look at when helping someone choose a Collette trip is how they like to travel.
Collette's Classic tours are their more traditional guided vacations. These groups average around 32 travelers and can have up to 44. They are a good option if you enjoy traveling with a group, meeting new people, and want a great balance between sightseeing and value.
Then there are Explorations, Collette's small-group tours.
These average around 19 travelers and have a maximum of 24. A smaller group can completely change the experience. You can visit smaller restaurants, explore places that aren't practical for a large motorcoach group, and have more opportunities to interact with the people and culture of the destination.
If you tell me, "James, I don't want to feel like I'm being herded around with 50 people," Explorations is probably where I'm going to start looking.
What Is a Guided Tour Actually Like?
I think some people hear "guided tour" and immediately picture sitting on a bus all day while someone talks into a microphone.
That isn't necessarily what today's guided vacations look like.
Yes, transportation and sightseeing are part of the experience, but a good itinerary should give you a combination of planned activities and opportunities to experience the destination.
That is also why I pay attention to the pace of the itinerary.
If you're changing hotels every single night and trying to see 12 things every day, you might technically see a lot, but you're probably going to come home needing another vacation.
I would rather help you find an itinerary that matches how you like to travel.
Some travelers want to see and do as much as humanly possible. Others would rather spend three nights in one city, have some free time, sit at a café, explore on their own, and actually enjoy being there.
Neither is wrong. We just need to find the right trip for you.
One of the Biggest Benefits: The Logistics Are Handled
This is probably one of the biggest reasons I like guided vacations.
Think about planning a two-week trip through Europe on your own.
You have hotels, transportation between cities, sightseeing reservations, attraction tickets, transfers, luggage, restaurant ideas, local transportation, and probably a dozen other little things you didn't even think about when you started planning.
With a guided tour, much of that work has already been done for you.
You can wake up in the morning knowing there is already a plan instead of spending part of your vacation trying to figure out how you're getting to the next city.
For the right traveler, that is a huge benefit.

What About Airfare?
Depending on the itinerary, Collette offers options that can include airfare or allow you to book the land portion separately.
This is something I can help you compare.
Sometimes bundling the airfare makes sense. Other times, we may want to look at booking your flights separately depending on the schedule, pricing, airline, cabin class, or how much flexibility you want before and after the tour.
I don't automatically assume one option is better than the other. We'll compare them.
Travel Protection
Travel protection is another thing I strongly recommend discussing, especially when you're investing several thousand dollars into a larger international vacation.
Collette offers a Travel Protection Plan, but like any travel protection product, you want to understand what you're actually purchasing.
What's covered? What's not covered? What happens if you have to cancel? Are there deadlines? What happens if something happens while you're already traveling?
Those are the questions we want answered before you need the coverage, not afterward.
